900,000 tonnes. It's a figure that appears in Grupo Antofagasta Minerals' public disclosure on at least 20 separate dates between April 2014 and May 2025. Yet it has not yet been produced.

Bar chart of Antofagasta's group copper production from 2013 to 2026 against a stated 900kt target: output ranges between roughly 640kt and 770kt across the period, never approaching the target, with 2018 (725kt) and 2026E (640kt, guidance midpoint) highlighted as the two years the target was measured against.

The 2013 annual report gave it a delivery date. Measured against the 721,200 tonnes the group produced that year, the target year was 2018, and the uplift was roughly a quarter. Antofagasta produced 725,300 tonnes in 2018. Growth of 0.6%.

The number survived, but the date was replaced.

By May 2022, the offering memorandum for the group's senior notes due 2032 carried the line "potential to grow up to 900ktpa by 2026". Same figure. New date. Eight years on.

On 13 August, Antofagasta cut its 2026 guidance to 625,000 to 655,000 tonnes after storms shut Los Pelambres. Midpoint 640,000. That sits 260,000 tonnes below the target, and 11% below what the company produced in 2013, the base year the target was measured against. The best year in between was 770,000 tonnes, in 2019.

None of this is wrong or intentionally misleading, by the way. Grades fell, water got harder, permitting slowed, and the group still delivered record EBITDA of $5.2 billion in 2025 on a 60% margin. This is a really well-run business in a hard jurisdiction.

The point is about metrics and context, not about Antofagasta.

A production target that outlives two delivery dates has stopped being a forecast. It has become a positioning statement. And the copper supply deficit that half the market is underwriting is an aggregation of thousands of them.

That gap is invisible in any single filing. It shows up only when you hold twelve years of filings and read them against each other.
